Keep score for netball stars
Special Olympics Australia
North Curl Curl
On 6 September this year, the John Fisher Netball Courts will play host to the NSW state championships for Special Olympics Australia. The one-day event will see 60 – 80 athletes compete for the title of state netball champions, and volunteers are needed as scorers, marshals, runners and registrars. Volunteers will be needed from 9am – 5pm, and a valid Working with Children Check and National Police Certificate are required. To apply, visit the SEEK website.
Feed those in need
Our Big Kitchen
Manly and the North Shore
Volunteers are needed to help feed hundreds of disadvantaged community members from across Sydney. Our Big Kitchen (OBK) is a community run, non-denominational, industrial kitchen, last year providing over 80,000 meals to Australians in need. The organisation is seeking helpers for a variety of roles, including food preparation, coordinating group activities, cleaning, packaging, setting up and packing down the kitchen and food distribution. Tasks will vary depending on the day, usually structured around an event at the kitchen. One off and regular volunteers are both encouraged to apply. To express your interest, head to the SEEK website.
Over 50s fun!
Community members over 50s are required to establish and run a Northern Beaches GoExplore! Mix and Mingle group. Volunteers will be responsible for organising fun activities for over 50s locals to socialise and connect, such as casual catch-ups, informal dinners, movie nights, attending festivals, doing karaoke, going for walks or hikes. The types of activities, and when they’re scheduled, are entirely up to the group members. Visit the GoExplore! Mix and Mingle Facebook group for more details.
Boogie with your new best bud
Gig Buddies Sydney
Manly, North Sydney and Chatswood
Gig Buddies matches volunteers that enjoy theatre, art or music with a ‘gig buddy’ who has a learning disability and/or autism and shares similar interests. The pair then take each other to events once or twice a month. You will be an empathetic, kind and outgoing person who is willing to help your new friend with practical and transport arrangements. No prior experience is needed, and all training will be provided, which usually encompasses a one-day session and police check. Interested parties are encouraged to apply at gigbuddiessydney.org.
